29 August - 4 September 2026
The sun moves through each of the Human Design gates; one gate every 5-6 days. As it does, it brings a collective theme to humanity, a spark on the treasure map of our Human Design chart that can be felt and invites exploration. I call these Stories from the Stars. Plus read to the bottom for details of upcoming events.
From today until 4th September, it’s the turn of Gate 40: The Gate of Aloneness.
Pull out your Human Design chart and see if you have Gate 40 defined (coloured in). If you do, you already know this energy, you have consistent access to it at all times. You might feel it a little stronger right now, and you’ll see it in those around you. If Gate 40 is undefined, it’s usually blank in your chart, but right now you’ll have a strong sense of the themes for the next few days, as will everyone else.
The core energy here is about aloneness. Gate 40, the Gate of Aloneness, carries a strong and sometimes misunderstood drive to withdraw from the demands of others, to rest after work has been given, and to restore the will and energy required to show up fully for the people and commitments that genuinely matter.
Gate 40 sits in the Heart Centre, the centre of willpower, self-worth, and the drive to contribute, and connects to Gate 37, the gate of friendship, via the Channel of Community.

Channel 40 forms the full arc from the agreements and bonds that hold a community together to the rest and restoration that make those bonds sustainable. But Gate 40 is the need for aloneness. Its job is to complete a cycle of work or contribution and then to fully withdraw, to take the space required to refuel before the next round of giving begins. The drive toward solitude this gate generates is meant to be a signal, pointing toward when enough has been given and when it is time to turn the energy back toward oneself.
In its high expression, Gate 40 brings a remarkable capacity for sustainable contribution. People with this energy defined know how to work hard and give generously, and they also know how to stop. They understand that rest is not laziness but the very thing that makes genuine contribution possible. They honour their need for aloneness without guilt, and they return from it with the will and warmth to give again. This is the energy of someone who is extraordinarily reliable to the people they have committed to, precisely because they have been honest about what they need in order to keep showing up.
In its low expression, the need for aloneness becomes either hidden or weaponised. There is a pattern here of continuing to give long past the point of genuine willingness, of honouring obligations out of guilt or duty while slowly emptying out inside, until what began as generosity curdles into resentment and exhaustion. The person keeps saying yes when every part of them is asking to stop, and the result is a martyrdom that benefits no one. The low expression can also swing in the opposite direction, withdrawing in a way that feels punishing to others, using aloneness as a way to signal displeasure rather than as genuine self-restoration.
Please note: we all move through the high and low expression of every gate. The aim is simply to notice what you notice rather than to judge yourself for where you land. Gate 40 is not asking you to become unavailable or to stop caring for the people around you. It is asking you to be honest about when your energy has been spent, and to trust that taking the space you need is an act of integrity rather than selfishness.
Because the Sun is currently transiting Gate 40, this energy becomes collective. You might notice people around you honouring their need for rest, setting clearer limits around their time and energy, and returning to their relationships and responsibilities with more genuine presence as a result. You might also notice the shadow: people running on empty and pretending otherwise, resentment building quietly beneath the surface of relationships that have become one-sided, or withdrawal that is punishing rather than restorative.
The invitation of Gate 40: Complete the work. Then stop. Take the aloneness you need without apology. Trust that the people who truly belong in your life will understand, and that you will have far more to offer them when you return.
Some journalling questions for you to reflect on Gate 40:
Where in your life are you continuing to give from an empty place, and what is stopping you from taking the rest that would allow you to give genuinely again
Where do you feel guilty about needing time alone, and where did the belief come from that your need for solitude is something to apologise for?
Think of a time when you took the space you needed and came back to your relationships and responsibilities with more energy and warmth than you had before. What did that teach you about the relationship between rest and contribution?
Where in your life has giving without stopping turned into resentment, and what would an honest conversation about your actual capacity look like in that situation?
-
What would it mean to treat your need for aloneness as a legitimate and necessary part of how you function, rather than as something to manage or minimise around the needs of others?
