The sun moves through each of the Human Design gates; one gate every 5-6 days. As it does, it brings a collective theme to humanity, a spark on the treasure map of our Human Design chart that can be felt and invites exploration. I call these Stories from the Stars. Plus read to the bottom for details of upcoming events.
From today until 20th June, it’s the turn of Gate 12: The Gate of Caution.
Pull out your Human Design chart and see if you have Gate 12 defined (coloured in). If you do, you already know this energy, you have consistent access to it at all times. You might feel it a little stronger right now, and you’ll see it in those around you. If Gate 12 is not coloured in, it’s usually undefined, but right now you’ll have a strong sense of the themes for the next few days, as will everyone else.
Gate 12 sits in the Throat Centre and is the gate of caution, standstill, and the power of waiting for the right moment to speak
The core energy here is about timing. Gate 12 carries a deep understanding that not every feeling needs to be expressed the moment it arises, and not every thought needs to be spoken out loud. It is connected to the Solar Plexus via Gate 22, which means it is essentially the voice of emotional truth. And emotional truth, when expressed at the right moment, has the power to move people. The caution this gate s wisdom, rather than shyness. It points to the fact that words spoken from a place of genuine feeling and inner clarity land entirely differently from words spoken to fill a silence, seek approval, or manage how others see us.
In its high expression, Gate 12 brings a capacity for authentic, artful expression. There is a quality here that people with this gate carry when they are truly in the mood to speak: their words carry weight, their tone carries feeling, and something in what they say gives language to what others have been experiencing but could not name. People with this gate defined (and that’s all of us for the next few days) have a gift for communicating emotional truth in a way that feels both precise and deeply human.
The high expression can also look like the courage to stay silent when the timing is not right, and the trust that when the mood arrives and the moment is ready, what needs to be said will be there.
In its low expression,
the caution flips into performance. There is a temptation to speak before the feeling is real, to fill the silence with words that are designed to impress, to manage perception, or to be seen in a particular way. This is what Richard Rudd (Gene Keys) calls the shadow of vanity: communication that comes from a need for external validation rather than from genuine inner truth. The words may be articulate, they may even be beautiful, but something in them rings hollow because they are not rooted in authentic feeling.
Or it might look like the opposite: a total withdrawal. A silencing of the self because the timing never feels quite right, or because somewhere along the way the voice was met with the wrong response and learned to stay hidden.
Please note: we all move through the high and low expression of all parts of our Human Design chart. The aim is not to ‘work on yourself until you become a high expression of every part of your chart.’ Each Story from the Stars is instead simply an invitation to notice what you notice, for me with Gate 12 usually undefined, when it is defined in this transit, this means I have the whole channel 22/12 and therefore a greater ability to speak my emotions out into the world (with all the caveats above). I get to experience what this feels like, so that I can know that this is NOT part of my natural energy at any other time. The noticing, the awareness, starts a shift inside you, without you having to create some big change-yourself program.
Because the Sun is currently transiting through Gate 12, this energy becomes collective. You might notice the world demonstrating a huge amount of the shadow expression of this gate, vanity (Richard Rudd, Gene Keys): a collective noise of words spoken not from the heart but for the audience, communication that performs rather than connects, and a difficulty sitting with silence or uncertainty without rushing to fill it.
Alternatively, you might see the higher expression: people speaking slowly and truthfully, saying the thing they have been holding back, giving voice to something real, and trusting that authentic expression, however imperfect, lands more deeply than polished performance ever could.
The invitation of Gate 12: Wait for the mood. Trust the silence. And when you do speak, let it come from the heart rather than from the part of you that wants to be seen in a certain way.
Some journalling questions for you to reflect on Gate 12:
When you speak or share something publicly, what is the feeling underneath it? Is it coming from a genuine impulse to connect, or from a need to be seen, approved of, or validated?
Is there something you have been holding back that actually is ready to be said? What would it take to trust your own timing on that?
Where in your life are you filling silences out of discomfort rather than speaking from a place of real feeling?
Have you ever said something at the wrong moment and watched it not land? What did that teach you about timing?
